Engagement Session Style Guide

So you’ve scheduled your engagement session, you’re excited for what the experience has in store, and now it’s time to talk details on what to wear. But where to start? Here’s five quick tips on picking out your engagement session outfits for coordinating the perfect look between you and your fiancé.

Dress It Up

I recommend choosing a midi or long flowy dress as they’re flattering on all body types, look amazing on camera, and bring extra movement and dimension to your photos. I always recommend avoiding pants and shorts for your session and saying yes to a dress (or two)! You won’t regret it! For him, you can’t go wrong with a dress shirt and pants with a blazer, or a well-tailored suit. Dumb of thumb – bring the fashion!

One or Two? It’s Up to You!

Want to rock more than one outfit? I say go for it! Two outfits are great if you want to bring the wow-factor and then bring it back to a date-night look. I am always happy to help my clients narrow down their options by having them share images of their outfits with me so that I can give feedback on what will look best on camera.

Choosing Colors

When choosing colors for your outfits, I recommend selecting lighter, neutral tones and more muted shades. Shades of soft pinks and muted blues, or any light-colored neutral is perfect. As you’re coordinating your outfit with your fiancé’s, keep in mind that your outfits don’t actually have to “match.”

Shoes

Heels are great! Bring a pair of flats in a bag to throw on when we’re moving from place to place. Your feet will thank you later!

Cold Weather Sessions

During fall or winter, warm neutrals like camel, taupe, cream, champagne, and gray are still going to look great. A statement coat with a beanie, scarf and gloves or a warm, oversized, snuggly sweater with ankle boots are great for these seasons.

Bonus: Clean Your Ring

Your ring hand will be featured in a lot of the photos, so if you have time before your session, get your ring shined up and treat yourself to a manicure!

At the end of the day, the outfits you wear or the location you choose won’t matter nearly as much as the memories you make as a couple. Your engagement session is a time to show off the joy you’re experiencing during this season of life. The style choices you make will definitely enhance your photos, but the most important accessory to bring with you is joyfulness –– which is the one that makes the biggest difference in your photos anyways. You don’t need to have prior experience in front of the camera. Just show up with a smile and your photographer will take care of the rest 🙂
